一般的に、Managerとは他人を通じて物事を行う人(get things done through other people)ですが、この考えをさらに進めて(人との距離感という観点から)、① Managing through Information ②Managing with People ③ Managing Action Directoryという3つのPlanesが提示されます。
The Inescapable Conundrums of Managingです。 ①Thinking Conundrums、②The Information Conundrums ③People Conundrums、④The Action Conundrums、⑤Overall Conundrumsという視点から考察が加えられます。
H. MintzbergとM.
When Michael Porter wrote in The Ecconomist that " I favor a set of analytic techniques to develop strategy"(1987), he was dead wrong: nobody ever developed a strategy through a technique( p.162).
These paradoxes and predicaments, labyrinths and riddles, are built into managerial work — they are managing — and there they shall remain. They can be alleviated but never eliminated, reconciled but never resolved(p. 192).
The overwhelming majority of research in finance in those days was no longer concerned with the question of whether markets were efficient. One just assumed that they were, and proceeded from there.
Financial markets are not natural phenomena. They are man-made-made by men and women whose business is gazing into an uncertain, risky future. The act of managing risk in such an environment alters that environment, creating a never-stable feedback loop.
These people(young quants) knew how to work statistical models, but they lacked the market experience needed to make informed judgments. Meanwhile, those with the experience, wisdom, and authority to make informed judgments-the bosses-didn't understand the statistical models.
The leap from observing that it is hard to predict stock price movements to concluding that those prices must therefore be right was, he declared at a conference in 1984, "one of the most remarkable errors in the history of economic thought.
Overconfidence doesn't get you to a theory of asset prices. It gets you to a theory of why asset prices overshoot their fundamental values-which in turn can coexist with a loose version of the efficient market hypothesis.
・・・ and for now we have to make do with the muddle of neoclassical and behavioral and experimental and asymmetric-information economics and finance that we have.
本日はJay. B. Barney(共著)のWhat I didin't Learn in Business Schoolです。Barney教授と言えば、RBV(Resource Based View)という経営戦略理論で大変有名な方です。 Ohio State University(Fisher College of Business)のExecutive Educationからのビデオクリップです。
What I didn't learn in Buisness School"であり、"Business School didn't teach・・・"ではありません。
Strategy making is part science, part art, part intuition, part politics, part analysis, part change management, and part just hard work.
Barry, D. and Elms, M. (1997) Strategy Retold: Toward a Narrative View of Strategic Discourse, Academy of Management Review, 22, pp. 429–52
Shaw, G.; Brown, R. and Bromiley, P. (1998) Strategic Stories: How 3M is Rewriting Business Planning, Harvard Business Review, May–June, pp. 2–8
Made to Stickには、Unexpected(意外性)、Credible(信憑性)という概念が紹介されていますが、Barry and Elms(1997)にもほぼ同じ概念として、Strategic Defamilialization,Strategic Credibilityといった概念が紹介されています。
